Breaking parole..

Bit behind on posting this but last Friday evening I went along to Secret Cinema’s production of The Shawshank Redemption.

Secret Cinema are the sister company of Future Cinema and specialise in producing immersive cinematic experiences. Every so often they produce an experience that is so inspiring it leaves you speechless.

The Shawshank Redemption was just that.

It started on Friday evening with us being summoned to court (a library in Bethnal Green) to be sentenced by a not so lenient judge. I was sentenced to 8 years in Oakhampton State Pen for a crime I did not commit.

From there we were transported by the most fabulous retro American bus that I’ve seen to what turned out to be the most beautiful building I have been in.

Once off the bus it was an intense, vibrant and engaging 3 hours filled with drama, laughter and fight scenes before we all sat down to watch the film – complete with popcorn.

I don’t want to go into too much detail in case they bring it back later in the year; part of the genius was the element of surprise. Pretty much from the moment I entered Oakhampton I had no clue what was going to happen next.

It was a slick and sophisticated production with a cast of around 50 actors that provided a truly engaging and immersive experience. You never knew who you were talking to and whether they were friend or foe.

Throughout the evening there were subtle references to the film, all done seamlessly.

The characters were just supberb and they made the whole experience as you could suddenly find yourself caught up in a prison brawl or in an impromptu sing a long!

My friend and I were left speechless when it ended and filled with inspiration – so much so that the film was almost an anti-climax! I could have happily spent several more hours in Oakhampton.

I would highly recommend checking out whatever they do next as I can only imagine they are going to continue to get bigger and better.

Tickets start at £40 but it is so worth it.
